About Free Tours China
What happens when a backpacker returns home with more than just souvenirs? In the case of Free Tours China, it led to a movement. Founded in 2017 by Dinna after months of travel across South America, this project was born from a deep belief in connection, between travelers and locals, stories and places, cultures and curiosity. Starting with just one city and one guide, the idea quickly caught fire. Today, Free Tours China is proud to have shared China’s rich, complex identity with over 20,000 travelers from across the globe. They are also the first and only free tour operator in the entire country.
Their approach is anything but ordinary. Where some tours scratch the surface, these guides dig deep—into daily life, shifting traditions, and the surprising moments that shape modern China. Every walk is a window into how fast things change, and how much still stays the same. They don’t just point at landmarks, they translate the rhythm of the street, the flavor of a neighborhood, and the unspoken customs that define Chinese life.
What makes this team different is their perspective. Raised in the culture they showcase, their guides are more than storytellers, they’re cultural interpreters. Whether it’s navigating language barriers or decoding local etiquette, they’re there to help you understand not just what you’re seeing, but why it matters: the real China. They want you to leave not just impressed by the skyline, but touched by the stories behind it.
For many visitors, China feels like a mystery: familiar in headlines, yet distant in day-to-day life. That’s where Free Tours China steps in. Their mission? To bridge that gap, bringing a real, personal, and often unexpected version of the country to travelers hungry for more than monuments. Time and again, they hear the same surprised reaction: “The China we see is so different from what we expected!”… and that moment of surprise is exactly the magic they live for.
