Free Tour of Shanghai
Small Beginnings, Sky-High Ambitions: From Fishing Village to Global Powerhouse
ABOUT THE Free Tour of Shanghai
This tour is operated by our partner Free Tours China.
Shanghai doesn’t just grow, it explodes. With each passing year, this city transforms faster than most of us can keep up, blending deep-rooted traditions with cutting-edge ambition. This 3.5 to 4 hour tour takes you through must-see landmarks in downtown Shanghai, walking you from the echoes of its humble past into the heart of its dynamic present.
Starting at People’s Square, you'll quickly feel the energy that defines the city. Pass by the striking City Hall of Shanghai before stepping into the green calm of People’s Park, where locals practice tai chi and search for love at the Shanghai marriage market—yes, parents still post résumés for their adult children! From there, dive into the stories of Shanghai’s old red-light district, a colonial-era zone once bustling with secrets and scandal.
Continue along East Nanjing Road, one of the world’s busiest pedestrian shopping streets. At the legendary Bund Area, marvel at the skyline showdown between old-world charm and modern mega-towers, and take in the historic European buildings that line the river. If you're joining the morning tour, you'll also explore the French Concession’s quiet charm and visit both Shanghai’s first cathedral and the lively Yuyuan Garden Bazaar.
This is a crash course in how Shanghai became Shanghai. Expect laughs, surprises, and plenty of “wait, what?” moments as your guide unpacks Shanghai’s layers of culture, commerce, community, and gastronomy.
A note on our tours in China
Free walking tours are about building bridges, not walls. They’re a unique opportunity to connect with local people, learn from different perspectives, and experience a city through the eyes of those who call it home.
That said, it’s important to keep in mind that history is often viewed through a local lens. Some topics may be presented differently depending on where you’re from, and certain subjects may not be openly discussed due to local laws and cultural norms.
Our partners in China are experienced, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing the country’s rich heritage—from dynasties and revolutions to food culture and daily life. While not every topic can be covered in full, historical accuracy and storytelling remain at the heart of every tour.
We appreciate your understanding and invite you to come with an open mind—and maybe leave with a new perspective.
