Free Tour of 20th Century Belgrade

ABOUT THE Free Tour of 20th Century Belgrade
This tour is operated by our partner Belgrade Walking Tours.
Dive deep into the turbulent history, dramatic transformations, and cultural icons that shaped Belgrade in the 20th century. This eye-opening 2.5-hour free tour explores how the city weathered war, politics, revolution, and resilience: from royal days to socialist rule, NATO bombings to rebirth. With a local guide leading the way, you’ll explore monumental architecture, poignant memorials, and stories too complex (and too Balkan) for the average textbooks.
Starting at Republic Square, you’ll pass the towering Albania Palace before heading into Terazije Square, home to the iconic Hotel Moscow (or Hotel Moskva). From there, take in the grand facades of the National Parliament, the City Assembly, and the Serbian Presidency. At Tasmajdan Park, you'll pause by Saint Mark's Church and the Russian Orthodox Church, before reflecting at the moving NATO bombing memorial sites: the Radio-Television of Serbia building and the "Why?" and "We Were Just Children" monuments.
Continuing through Vračar’s charming streets, you’ll pass by the Nikola Tesla Museum and admire the Faculty of Law before arriving at bustling Slavija Square. The tour ends with a visit to the impressive National Library of Serbia and the crown jewel of modern Belgrade: the Saint Sava Temple, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
By the end, you’ll realize Belgrade’s 20th century wasn’t just a drama movie... it could’ve been a whole series. What starts as a walk through buildings and statues becomes a crash course in how this city turned chaos into character and concrete into culture. Expect big stories, sharp contrasts, and plenty of “wait, that really happened?” moments.
