Underground Secrets of Belgrade Tour

Belgrade Below: Where Wine, War, and Weirdness Collide

ABOUT THE Underground Secrets of Belgrade Tour

This tour is operated by our partner Belgrade Walking Tours.

Think you’ve seen all of Belgrade? Not until you’ve ventured beneath it. This fascinating 2.5-hour tour peels back the layers of the city’s deepest secrets. Step below the surface and into a world shaped by power, mystery, forgotten empires... and a surprising amount of wine.

The adventure begins with a descent into the Roman Well, one of Belgrade’s most intriguing enigmas. Though not actually Roman, this early 18th-century marvel spirals 51 meters into the ground with two intertwining staircases that even Alfred Hitchcock found spine-tingling. Just steps away, we dive into the Cold War bunker, built in the 1950s for Tito’s military elite, though thankfully never used for its intended purpose.

Next, journey into the Austrian gunpowder storage (Barutana), a 16th-century man-made cave turned Lapidarium. Inside, Roman sarcophagi, sacrificial altars, and ancient tombstones whisper tales of empires past. The tour also uncovers centuries-old food caverns and a 19th-century wine cellar, where your reward for all this time travel is a free glass of local wine.

Forget the typical sightseeing checklist. This is the Belgrade most visitors never see: dark, dramatic, and delightfully different. History comes with a twist down here, and whether you're into mid-century mayhem or just came for the wine, one thing’s for sure: you'll leave with a buzz... of knowledge (and maybe from the wine, too).
