Free Tour of Manchester
Where Cotton and Kicks Make History Stick
ABOUT THE Free Tour of Manchester
This tour is operated by our partner Si Manchester.
From Roman settlements to revolutionary soundtracks, Manchester has been the beating heart of industry, ideas and identity for centuries. Join passionate local guides on this 2-hour free walking tour through the streets where workers marched, music was born and a little worker bee became a symbol of unity and pride.
We’ll meet outside the Manchester Central Library, right next to the iconic red telephone booths. From there, we’ll head into St. Peter’s Square, where the city’s timeline begins to unfold, packed with stories of political thinkers, powerful protests and a buzzing sense of civic pride (keep your eyes peeled for the bee)!
Our walk takes us to the striking Free Trade Hall, the backdrop of the tragic Peterloo Massacre and a key location in the rise of democratic Britain. Here, you’ll also learn about Manchester’s fierce cultural revival, its pioneering role in LGBTQ+ rights and its rebellious music scene that gave the world bands like Joy Division, The Smiths and Oasis.
Next, we’ll pass the elegant Midland Hotel and the historic Albert Hall, two buildings that have witnessed decades of music, social change and Mancunian mischief. Just around the corner, at City Hall, we'll uncover tales of activism, multiculturalism and the proud communities that call Manchester home.
We’ll then wander into the Commercial District to admire the grand architecture of the Royal Exchange, a symbol of Manchester’s wealth and influence during the 19th-century cotton boom. And finally, we’ll wrap things up outside the majestic Manchester Cathedral, where your guide will share insider tips and ideas to make the most of your time in the city.
More than a history lesson, this is the full Manchester experience: loud, proud and totally unforgettable.
